Applications of AI in the future have received an equal share of criticism and support from researchers, tycoons and tech giants across the globe. But one of the AI researchers and MIT Physicist Max Tegmark has brilliantly discussed the way we can use AI for the betterment of society. In the TED Talk ‘How to get empowered, not overpowered by AI’, Tegmark said that if we could steer the way we use AI, which means that if we understand the where’s and how’s of applications of AI reinforced with moral concepts and decisions, we can make sure that people throughout the world can realize their dreams and lead fulfilling lives. This blog is about one of the domains which support the vision presented by Max Tegmark. When integrated with AI, the domain can bring about a significant change in the way we consume information for gaining knowledge, i.e., education.


Progress on an AI-empowered Education system

Many AI tools and technologies help students develop their skill sets; although a majority of them are targeted for specifications, studies in technology and science. We have yet to come up with tools that use technology coupled with AI to solve students’ and teachers’ problems in nontechnical domains such as the arts. It is necessary to design state-of-the-art systems that can facilitate students’ learning and improve their experiences, therefore, providing the necessary opportunities to achieve the goals irrespective of their background and abilities.

As an initiative, advancements have been made in automating the process of learning systems. Companies such as Content Technologies and Carnegie Learning are currently developing intelligent instruction design and digital platforms that use AI to provide learning, testing, and feedback to students from pre-K to the college level that gives them the challenges they are ready for, identifies gaps in knowledge and redirects to new topics when appropriate [1]. Adopting AI with individualized learning has helped students tailor their studies and be prepared for the global job market. Coursera, one of the largest online course providers, is working on improving the quality of courses using AI technologies to facilitate students’ understanding of complex concepts and build strong foundations.Similarly, in domains where technology doesn’t dominate, some initiatives have been taken by software designers and developers in collaboration with artists in designing tools and systems, helping new learners jump-start their career and enjoying their learning experience. To understand AI’s advancements in such domains, let’s discuss the involvement of AI in the most popularly known art specification fields – Music and Film.


AI in Music

The challenges faced in music and film art studies are what you can term as ‘open-ended.’ These studies do not have any specific list of goals or objectives that one can look out for and work towards achieving. In fact, an artist’s main objective is to make the piece of art ‘interesting.’ In such cases, AI cannot help individual learners generate or set objectives. The objectives are to be set and defined by the music and film producers that are unique and completely different from others. AI in these domains was initially used and applied to understand the listeners’ behavior with respect to the composition and contents of art pieces (e.g., Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc.).

An AI-empowered intelligent tutoring system is a bit of a challenging quest that we have yet to conquer, but that doesn’t mean we have not started on the journey itself. The realization of the vision of having an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) specifically for music began with the four-part chorale writing system called Vivace, which was designed and developed by Marilyn Taft Thomas in 1985. It was a rule-based AI system used for composing music, and it does so by collecting abstracted text from books of past composers [2]. ITS can use the rules generated by Vivace in the future as a baseline for generating lessons for students in order for them to understand and compose music. Over a span of approximately 35 years we have observed an exponential growth in technology and have come up with AI tools such as Amper,AIVA, Evoke Music,DeepJamsand Loudlythat can help music composers to produce masterpieces.In a few years, it may be possible for us to come up with an AI system that may have the potential to host such powerful tools for developing the learning environment or will learn from the rules and procedures proposed by the AI empowered tools that will help music enthusiasts in the future to gain mastery over music.


AI in Film

The involvement of AI is similarly observed in the film industry. Most film producers have realized the importance of data and its impact on the industry. Tools that use AI as a service or as an inbuilt package which include data analytics and science are in high demand by the film industry, directors, and producers to help produce aesthetically appealing films accepted by the masses.
